PHOENIX — An Arizona man said he is hiking 170 miles across Scotland with several of his family members in order to raise money and awareness for pancreatic cancer research.

Donavon Roberson from Gilbert said he and his father Dan, brother Adam and cousin Devon are about halfway across their hiking trip, where they are travelling from Iona to Pitlochry, the family’s ancestral home, in Scotland.

Roberson said the group has been planning the trip for three years. The men chose Scotland due to their family roots and in honor of his grandfather and uncle, who both passed away from pancreatic cancer.

“We decided to make it an opportunity to raise awareness to [pancreatic cancer] research,” Roberson said, adding that the group has reached their goal of $6,000 in donations and is now looking to hit $7,000.

Their fundraiser is called Crossing Alba: A Pilgrimage Home. The idea was inspired by the 2010 film “The Way,” in which a father heads overseas to recover the body of his estranged son.

Roberson said they plan to finish their trip and be back in the States by May 12.

We want to hear from you.
