PHOENIX — A memorial marker for the late Phoenix Police officer Dave Glasser has been erected at 48th Lane and Baseline Road in a Phoenix neighborhood.

The plaque was unveiled Wednesday in the southwest Phoenix area of Laveen. A copy was also presented to Glasser’s widow, Kristen, and his parents.

Glasser was shot while investigating a burglary call in the area May 18, 2016. He died of his injuries the next day. His family donated his organs.

The Phoenix Police and Fire Departments were there, along with representatives from the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association (which held a fundraising barbecue after Glasser’s death last May that raised over $300,000).

Commander Tom Van Dorn was Glasser’s lieutenant. “This is just the second time I’ve been back down [to the shooting scene] since the incident,” he said.

“It’s just not one of those things I choose to come down and remember and reflect upon. For me, it’s more about celebrating the life and legacy that we all knew Dave to be, and continuing to honor him.

“Of course, wouldn’t miss [the ceremony] for the world … show our gratitude and respect for a good friend and colleague.”

Phoenix Fire Capt. Bradley Johnston was heading Engine 58; the squad was on scene the day of the shooting, and transported Glasser to the hospital.

“It’s an emotional event,” he said. “You don’t realize it until you’re back here at the scene. But it’s very important for all of us that the plaque’s there. And, it recognizes David for his sacrifice for his job and the community and his family.

“To give your life in the line of duty is the ultimate sacrifice. I think it’s very important that it’s there so the community can see that.”

We want to hear from you.
