Summer came early: Phoenix officially hits first triple-digit heat of year

PHOENIX — It’s official: Phoenix reached 100 degrees on Wednesday, marking the first time this year that the Valley has seen triple-digit temperatures.

The National Weather Service tweeted Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport reached the coveted 100 degrees around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The triple-digit temperatures just could not wait to get to Phoenix and even arrived a little early, as the agency called for a high about 100 degrees on Thursday and 103 degrees on Friday.

This week will not be the first time Phoenix has flirted with triple-digit heat in 2017. Two weeks ago, the official temperature at Sky Harbor International Airport topped out at 99 degrees, though some suburbs saw temperatures of at least 100 degrees.

And much like two weeks ago, a cold front is expected to follow the high temperatures.

“The good news is, it looks like — the models are still a little bit uncertain — but it looks like there could be a pretty strong and anomalously cool system for May,” Rogers said.

Sunday’s high is expected to be about 84 degrees, which Rogers said would be remarkable for this time of year.

Weather Service officials said the average first 100-degree day from 1981 to 2010 in Phoenix occurred on May 2 with the earliest 100-degree day in the city’s history coming on March 26, 1988.

Last year, the first 100-degree day in Phoenix was May 4.
