Mesa trims list for police chief to 4 candidates

PHOENIX — The search for a new police chief in Mesa is nearing its end, with four candidates named finalists.
City Manager Chris Brady said Thursday that the four, including interim Chief Michael Dvorak, will begin the last interview round soon.
“I am excited that we have four very qualified individuals who have the knowledge, skills and experience to lead our police department,” Brady said.
The other candidates are Tucson Assistant Chief Ramon Batista, Texas State University Chief Jose Banales and former San Jose, California, chief Robert Davis.
Two community panels recommended the final four. Next, the finalists will meet with a committee of city department leaders, Mayor John Giles and members of the city council.
The candidates will also meet with the community at an open house scheduled for May 4.
John Meza retired as chief at the end of last year. He worked in the department for nearly 30 years, including eight as assistant chief and the last year plus of his career in charge.
