PHOENIX — A Phoenix teenager who asked Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone to prom via a clever video shared his answer on national television Friday.
She said no in the nicest possible way without even saying no, but Jacob Staudenmaier of Arcadia High School is hardly complaining.
He and his “La La Land”-inspired overture to the film’s leading lady have been featured on CNN, E! entertainment news, People magazine and USA Today, among others. The 17-year-old read Stone’s response on “Good Morning America.”
He seemed to be taking it pretty well.

Stone wrote: “Jacob, thanks for making the greatest proposal I’ve ever received. I can’t tell you what an honor it was and how much I smiled through that entire, beautifully orchestrated video. I’m in London working, but I hope you have the best time at prom and I’m grateful you thought of me. Thank you. …”
Staudenmaier tweeted out the video of his prom invitation to the Valley native earlier this week and it went viral.
The teen said he was influenced to pursue the prom-posal video idea by a schoolmate’s well-received video prom invite to another celebrity.
“A kid that went to my school two or three years ago, he actually prom-posed to Miley Cyrus. … I thought I had to follow it up.”
Staudenmaeir, a movie buff who said he’d seen “La La Land” three times, plans to go to the formal dance.
“I’m going to have a great time with all my friends.”
