PHOENIX — Travelers driving around the southeast Phoenix area should plan alternate routes because of freeway closures this weekend.

The Arizona Department of Transportation announced on Thursday that all Pecos Road eastbound and westbound lanes between 24th Street and Interstate 10, Interstate 10 ramps to and from Pecos Road and the westbound lane of the Loop 202 Santan Freeway at Interstate 10 will be closed.

The lanes and ramps are expected to close starting Friday at 9 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m.

The closures are of part of construction of the South Mountain Freeway. The Loop 202 extension was expected to be ready in 2019.

The South Mountain Freeway will connect the East Valley and West Valley and create an alternate route to the Interstate 10 through downtown Phoenix.

ADOT suggests Ray Road or Chandler Boulevard as alternate routes.

Motorists should also expect several changes when the lanes are reopened on Monday.

Among the new features will be a new speed limit, double yellow line, no freeway shoulders and no left turns will be allowed at Pecos Road and 32nd Street.

Additional freeway restriction information will be posted on azdot.gov.

We want to hear from you.
