PHOENIX — Hotel prices in the Valley for the upcoming NCAA Final Four tournament weekend in the Valley are among the highest they have ever been, a website said.
“Average hotel rates in metro Phoenix have reached the second-highest level in their history,” CheapHotels.org spokeswoman Barbara Adams said in a press release.
The website said nightly rates in the Valley are running about 98 percent above average, but things get much more expensive the closer fans stay to the action.
Available double rooms near University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale — where the Final Four will be played — start about $400 per night, a full 300 percent above average.
Open rooms in downtown Phoenix — where some of the tournament-related events are being held — and the always popular Scottsdale are running about $300 per night.
Cheaper rooms, in the neighborhood of $200 per night, are available in other parts of the Valley.
The high hotel prices will affect a lot of fans coming to Arizona. Phoenix Sky Harbor said this week it is expecting about 70,000 people to fly in for the tournament.
Those fans could turn to alternative vacation options, such as Airbnb.
“In the Phoenix area this weekend, the typical price is only $94 per night,” company spokeswoman Laura Rillos said. “In Glendale, it’s $110 per night.”
Rillos said about 9,200 fans are expected to use Airbnb during their stay in Phoenix.
