Phoenix’s proposed budget to include $1.3M for public safety

PHOENIX — The proposed budget for Phoenix would include $1.3 million funding for improved public safety, city officials said this week.

Phoenix’s proposed budget for the 2017-2018 fiscal year also heavily focuses on community issues such as requests from the community on new or expanded services, possibly putting away funds for future city needs and more.

“This budget is balanced and focuses on keeping our residents safe,” City Manager Ed Zuercher said in a press release.

According to a city council report made Tuesday, the general fund portion of the budget has seen a surplus of $1.9 million.

Some recommendations for the funds include adding 16 police civilian assistants to shift administrative work, 22 park rangers, homelessness outreach teams, more bus routes and permanent security and youth education staffers at the Burton Barr Central Library.

The city recommended setting aside more than $640,000 as a rainy day fund for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

Phoenix residents will be able to give their input in a series of community meetings scheduled April 4-20.

Changes could be made after public input and before the city manager proposes the budget on May 9.
