PHOENIX — What do Arizona State, Harvard, Stanford and the University of Chicago all have in common? All these universities are home to Rhodes, Marshall and Churchill scholarship winners.

The university celebrated its reputation as a top producer of scholars during its second-annual Fulbright Day on Tuesday, ASU Now reported, which allows students to learn about the application process and meet other Fulbright scholars.

Arizona State is home to six faculty Fulbright Scholars, tying with Cornell, University of Georgia, University of Texas at Austin, University of Washington and Western Michigan University for sixth in the nation.

Additionally, the university is home to 15 student Fulbright Scholars, tying it with Boston College, Cornell, Northwestern University, University of Louisville and University of Maryland for No. 11 nationwide.

The university holds these honors on top of being the home to the three Rhodes, Marshall and Churchill scholarship winners, all of whom are in Barrett, The Honors College and will graduate in May.

Ngoni Mugwisi, an electrical engineering major, is the university’s first Rhodes Scholar since 2001, while global studies major Erin Schulte is the 18th student to win the Marshall Scholarship and Christopher Balzer, a chemical engineering major, is the university’s first Churchill Scholar.

Mugwisi called the distinction “really exciting, because ASU is also the most innovative school and it goes to show that the potential here is unlimited and there’s a lot happening behind the scenes,” ASU Now reported.

Kyle Mox, director of the Lorraine W. Frank Office of National Scholarships Advisement at ASU, said university officials are always encouraging students to apply for these scholarships.

“They don’t see it as something achievable, and we’re here to tell you it is,” Mox told ASU Now.

We want to hear from you.
