The organization said that the breed is the ideal family dog because of its even temperament, ability to excel in sports and save lives.
“The Lab is such a versatile dog that it’s no wonder it makes a great companion for a variety of lifestyles,” American Kennel Club Vice President Gina DiNardo said in a statement online.
The German Shepherd and Golden Retriever were second and third of the list. The Boxer breed makes the list as No. 10.
Rottweilers were slowly making their way up the national registry of purebred dog pedigrees. The Rottweiler rose one spot from 2015 to No. 8.
The American Kennel Club was founded in 1884 in New York and has 189 dog breeds registered.
