PHOENIX — Phoenix Sky Harbor has given a peek into what its multimillion-dollar Sky Train extension will look like.
The airport posted the above video to YouTube earlier this week. It shows a rendering of the extension that will connect the airport’s rental car pickup and return facility — located on the west side of the airport near 16th Street and Buckeye Road — to terminals.
“The extension will be about $700 million and that will be paid for not with local tax dollars, but with passenger fees — airline passenger fees and rental customer fees,” Julie Rodriguez with the airport said.
The video shows the train will primarily run above ground, but will it run under a taxiway connecting the north and south runways.
It will also connect to a future facilities and operations yard and a ground transportation station near parking.
The project is expected to be completed by 2020.
The PHX Sky Train opened in 2013 and quickly became popular. It carried hit the one million passengers mark the year it opened and hit the 10 million passengers milestone in 2015.
Once it’s completed, the Sky Train will connect the rental car facility, Terminal 3, Terminal 4, the East Economy parking lot and a transportation hub located near 44th and Washington streets. The rides are free.
Terminal 2 is accessible from the Sky Train via a short walkway.
Prior to the Sky Train’s construction, passengers relied on a shuttle system to get from terminal to terminal and to the rental car center.
