Arizona, Mexican officials team up to make border traffic safer, more efficient

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation is working to make traffic safer and more efficient at the border.
Spokesman Tom Herrmann said the department has partnered with Mexican law enforcement officials to create the Border Liaison Unit.
The unit aims to educate truckers on issues such as permit requirements, weight limits and inspection procedures, so they are ready before they even get to the border.
Herrmann said the goal is to “educate the drivers and the commercial trucking companies on what we’re looking for in a safety inspection.”
According to ADOT, $30 billion in imports and exports moved through the state’s border ports in 2015. And when trucks do not pass their inspections, Herrmann said, it could hurt the state’s economy.
“Moving commerce across the international border is such an important part of the economy for the state of Arizona and really for the country,” Herrmann said.
