PHOENIX — The Coconino National Forest service has announced the opening of permit reservations for Fossil Creek for the 2017 season.
The swimming hole near Campe Verde and Strawberry, Ariz. now has a permit system in place to allocate 148 designated parking spots one month in advance. Those planning to visit in April can begin purchasing permits on March 1.
“The reservation system was very successful last summer,” said Red Rock District ranger Nicole Branton. “The amount of trash, the numbers of vehicles waiting to park, and the volume of law enforcement incidents all declined substantially, and visitors were very happy to know they had a guaranteed parking spot.”
The permits are $6 and allow visitors access to specific parking lots. There are multiple parking lots along the Fossil Creek river corridor, allowing the pass-holders to park nearest to the place they wish to enjoy the creek.
The Forest Service said the public can access the reservation system online at www.recreation.gov and searching “Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic River” or by calling (877) 444-6777.
