Phoenix Fire Department fights blaze at mattress and cabinetry building

Feb 25, 2017, 12:36 PM

PHOENIX — Smoke could be seen for miles from a fire that was burning in the middle of Phoenix Saturday morning.

Phoenix fire crews responded to a call of a fire near Indian School Road and 39th Avenue at around 11 a.m. Saturday.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, they sent a first alarm assignement crew, about 10-15 trucks and 50 firefighters, to a commercial structure. The fire in the building, which was a mattress and cabinetry business, was put out quickly, but the building was a total loss.

According to Phoenix Fire Capt. and Public Information Officer Mark Vanacore, they aren’t sure yet whether this was an operative business, and there were no casualties to civilians or firefighters at this time.

News about the fire quickly grew as people were posting photos of the smoke they could see from miles away on social media.

“(The smoke) could be contributed to the materials burning,” Vanacore said. “Once again, it was contained in the building. There were some other buildings nearby that were not — because of the quick work of the firefighters — were not even threatened or affected by the building that was burning.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
