PHOENIX — A 7-year-old boy who was critically injured in a Phoenix-area hit-and-run died from his injuries on Friday, according to Mesa police.
The boy was crossing the street near 56th Street and Broadway Road in Mesa when he was struck by 23-year-old Maria De Jesus Cabrera Davila on Wednesday.
He was immediately taken to a nearby trauma hospital, where he suffered from a head injury and a cervical fracture and was placed on life support.
Davila was arrested Wednesday in connection with the accident and was charged with suspicion of failure to remain at the scene of a serious injury collision.
Police said Friday they will not pursue additional charges against Davila.
Davila was driving with an Arizona learner’s permit without a licensed driver in the vehicle when she hit the boy and fled.
She told police she initially fled the scene because she was afraid and believed she had killed the boy, but returned after a family member convinced her to.
Police said they did not know if she has a lawyer yet and impairment did not appear to be a factor in the accident.
