PHOENIX — A group of middle school students from a Phoenix suburb will travel to Washington, D.C. for a national science competition, according to a press release.

Students from BASIS Chandler will travel to the nation’s capitol to complete in the 2017 National Science Bowl Finals from April 27 to May 1.

The students were awarded the honor after winning the regional competition this past weekend. Now, they will compete against more than one hundred other middle and high schools to take home the top honor.

The National Science Bowl allows students to use their knowledge and problem-solving skills to answer questions on a range of scientific topics.

Dr. J. Stephen Binkley, acting director of the Department’s Office of Science, said in the press release that competing in the bowl is a “unique opportunity” where competitors get to “showcase their talents as top students in math and science.”

The top 16 high school teams and the top 16 middle school teams in the finals will win $1,000 for their school. More than 14,000 students compete in the bowl each year.
