Like catchy freeway signs? ADOT offering chance to write your own

PHOENIX — Most drivers in Arizona have probably noticed the clever, catchy or wacky freeway signs around the Valley that urge better driving habits, but now, the Arizona Department of Transportation is asking citizens to submit phrases of their own.
In its “Safety Message Contest,” ADOT is allowing people to submit a safety slogan through Feb. 19. Fifteen handpicked messages will be declared finalists, and the public will vote on the winner among those.
The winning message will appear on electronic signs all over Arizona.
The department stated its effort to write zany signage began over a year ago to bring attention and social awareness to good driving habits.
“At ADOT, we bring up the example of imagining someone walking into a preschool and lighting up a cigarette,” said Deputy Director for Policy Kevin Biesty, in a statement.
“Forget that it’s illegal; it’s completely socially unacceptable. We want to get to a point where impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding and aggressive driving are socially unacceptable and the messages ADOT displays on signs are a good way to start those conversations.”
Participants can submit as many entries as they’d like, with only a few rules: write just three lines of text with 18 characters per line, and there shall be no hashtags, phone numbers, websites or emojis.
