LISTEN: Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema

PHOENIX — Arizona Rep. Kyrsten Sinema said she will be attending President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday — but not because she wants to, because it’s her job.

In an interview with Mac and Gaydos on Wednesday, Sinema, who is a Democrat, said it’s her job “as an elected official to represent my district, be there in person and watch and witness a peaceful transfer of power.”

“The reason I decided to go is, frankly, it’s my job,” Sinema said. “I’m an elected official in U.S. Congress. The executive, whether or not it’s an individual who I personally supported, I don’t think that matters.”

Sinema’s comments come just days after two of her colleagues, Reps. Ruben Gallego and Raul Grijalva, announced they will be joining the 60-plus House Democrats in protesting the inauguration.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, however, will be in attendance.

Sinema did not voice an opinion on whether it is right or wrong for her colleagues to skip the ceremony, saying instead that “everyone needs to make his own decision.”

Buf for now, Sinema said she is excited to join the “well over 150 of my own constituents” in attending the inauguration and helping to make sure “they have the experience they’re hoping for.”

We want to hear from you.
