PHOENIX — Amazon announced Thursday that it planned to hire 100,000 workers across the U.S. over the next year plus, including Arizona.

The online retail giant said the jobs were full time with benefits. There were 151 openings posted online for metro Phoenix, but most of the jobs will be out of state.

“We plan to add another 100,000 new Amazonians across the company over the next 18 months as we open new fulfillment centers, and continue to invent in areas like cloud technology, machine learning, and advanced logistics,” company CEO Jeff Bezos said in a release.

Many of the jobs will be at fulfillment centers being built in California, Florida, Kentucky and Texas. More centers were under construction in other states, as well.

Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. said it had expanded its American workforce by more than 150,000 in the past five years.

The hiring surge comes as traditional retailers cut jobs and close stores.
