PHOENIX — If you’ve searched the solar system for a last-minute Christmas gift, look to the stars.
From telescopes to books and movies, there are plenty of cool presents to get kids gazing into the night sky.
The best part about this gift?
“The children today are obviously the future astronauts and scientists of tomorrow,” said KTAR’s Dr. Sky. He addresses many of these topics on his weekly show on KTAR News 92.3 FM Saturdays at 3 a.m.
However, beginning with a telescope might not be the best introduction, he stated.
“I would start off with binoculars,” Dr. Sky explained. “You get to see objects with both eyes, it’s easy to transport and then as the parents gauge that level of interest, and we can always then move to the telescope.”
Dr. Sky added that Arizona is lucky to have a night sky that is made for stargazing.
“We have such a great tradition and history of Arizona skies,” he said.
Kids can start off by looking for the moon, then move on to Mars and Saturn.
Nowadays, Dr. Sky explained that moms and dads can also get kids a cool app to teach them the stars.
