PHOENIX — The city of Phoenix is taking steps to modernize its street lights.

Over the next two years, the city’s 100,000 street lights will be converted to LED lighting. The project will cost $30 million, but it will also save the city about $22 million in energy and maintenance costs through 2030.

“It’s really important for the cost-savings, it’s what we owe future generations,” said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. “It’s actually going to be a better visual product for the residents. We worked closely with the residents to pick out the lighting type that they like.”

Phoenix city councilwoman Laura Pastor said the new LED lighting will have less glare than current street lights, and the new lights will last longer than current bulbs.

“We’re always looking for efficiencies and this is the right time to do it,” Pastor said. “It’s an important time to modernize ourselves as we move towards the future.”
