Chernobyl arch reaches final resting spot in rare engineering feat

Surrounded by 19 miles of exclusion zone, the site of the world’s largest nuclear disaster is now the birthplace of one of the world’s greatest engineering feats.
Thirty years after the catastrophe at Chernobyl, a giant arch shelter has been officially completed to seal off the radioactive remains of the now-infamous Reactor 4.
Construction on the New Safe Confinement (NSC) began back in 2010, and was financed through a partnership with 30 nations around the globe, including the United States.
The 32,000-ton-arch was moved 327 meters from its assembly point and placed in its final resting spot on Tuesday.
The giant arch is designed to serve as an air-tight seal around the disaster site for at least a century, according to engineers.
