Woman survives after car slams underneath big rig on Phoenix-area freeway

PHOENIX — A woman managed to escape life-threatening injuries Friday morning after her SUV ended up wedged beneath a semi-trailer on a Phoenix-area freeway.
The three-vehicle wreck shut down part of westbound Loop 202 in Chandler near Alma School Road around 5 a.m.
Authorities said the woman was part of two collisions, the last of which slammed the SUV into the semi with enough force to take off most of the vehicle’s roof.

Fire crews had to extricate the woman. No one else was hurt.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said the woman’s SUV collided with a work truck, which drove into the freeway’s center wall. That caused the SUV driver to lose control of her vehicle.
The SUV then crossed to the outside traffic lane and wedged underneath big rig’s trailer.
Cause of the collision was under investigation.
