PHOENIX — Former Arizona State Sen. Tom O’Halleran beat three opponents Tuesday to win the race for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District.

The Democrat had earned slightly more than 50 percent of the vote by 10:30 p.m., beating out Republican Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, Libertarian Kim Allen and Green Party candidate Ray Parrish.

The seat opened when incumbent Ann Kirkpatrick decided to run for U.S. Senate. She lost to John McCain on Tuesday.

The 1st District includes Apache, Coconino, Graham, Greenlee and Navajo counties, along with sections of Gila, Maricopa, Mohave, Pima, Pinal and Yavapai counties also included.

O’Halleran represented District 1 at the statehouse from 2007 to 2009 after spending five years, 2001-2006, in the Arizona House of Representatives.

Babeu, who had been sheriff since 2008, will be looking for a job, and Pinal County deputies will have a new leader.

Voters were choosing between Republican Mark Lamb or Democrat Kaye Dickson.
