Despite its name, “Loving” is not a chick flick, but it is about one of the most legally-significant relationships in American history.
It is based on a real couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who married in Washington, D.C. in 1958. When they returned to their home in Virginia, they found out that their marriage was illegal under state law.
After being discovered, the Lovings became emroiled in a nine-year court case that ultimately wound up in the Suprme Court, where it was ruled, in 1967, that interracial couples were legally allowed.
“Loving” is a very smart film that has a lot of modern comparisons. It’s fairly slow-paced, but it offers a fascinating look into the civil rights movement.
