Suburban Phoenix mayors place friendly wager on World Series

PHOENIX — A city official in the Valley is going to have to make good on a World Series bet fairly soon.
Mayor Georgia Lord of Goodyear, where the Cleveland Indians train during the spring, and Mayor John Giles of Mesa, spring home of the Chicago Cubs, have made a friendly wager — loser has to wear the jersey of the other’s team.
The payoff will happen at the next Maricopa Association of Governments meeting in December.
Games six and seven of the World Series were scheduled to be played Tuesday and Wednesday in Cleveland.
The American League champion Indians lead the series, 3-2.
Each city has hosted watch parties.

Cleveland left Florida for Goodyear Ballpark in 2009. The Indians share the facility with the Cincinnati Reds, who also relocated from Florida’s Grapefruit League.
The National League Cubs’ Sloan Park opened in 2014. The team didn’t have to go far — the club had spent several years in Mesa at HoHokam Park.
