PHOENIX — Voters may be concerned with the 2016 election, but one Arizona politician already has his eye on the 2018 race: Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton filed paperwork Tuesday exploring a run for secretary of state.

“In the coming months, I will take a serious look at future opportunities to continue to serve the people of Arizona,” he said in a statement.

He would enter the race as a Democrat and would run against incumbent Michele Reagan, assuming the Republican opts to pursue a second term. She filed her own exploratory paperwork to run again earlier this month.

Should Stanton go on to win the election in 2018, he would have to resign his mayorship early. His term is due to expire in 2019. He said the potential 2018 run would not affect his mindset.

“My top priority is serving the people of Phoenix,” he said in the statement. “Being mayor of this great city is my dream job and I am excited to expand on our city’s recent successes.”

Stanton, a Phoenix native, took office in 2012. He served on the Phoenix City Council between 2000 and 2009.
