PHOENIX — Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will be in the Phoenix area this week in support of Sen. John McCain’s re-election campaign.
Romney will appear Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at a get-out-the-vote gathering at Sloan Park, spring-training home of the Chicago Cubs, in Mesa.
Gates were scheduled to open at 5:30 p.m.
McCain, who is running for a sixth term, holds a comfortable lead over Democratic rival Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick.
Romney, who was governor of Massachusetts, succeeded McCain as their party’s presidential nominee in 2012.
He and McCain have been outspoken in their personal views on GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. In the spring, Romney presented a rundown of Trump’s shortcomings to a crowd.
McCain withdrew his support of Trump in early October, on the heels of a scandal surrounding crude comments the billionaire made about women.
