“This is so sad. This is really and truly a good kid.”

Phoenix Police Sgt. Darren Burch can’t help but get emotional talking about the murder of 18-year-old Jonathan Peters. He was working two summer jobs as he prepared to start college in the fall. He planned to be a doctor.

“He was a stand-out at Buckeye High School, played four years of football, was very, very involved with his church and was the middle child of five children,” Burch said.

On Saturday, June 2, 2012, at about 3:30 a.m., Peters and his two female cousins went to McDonald’s to get some food. When they got home, they realized Peters didn’t get his food, so they all jumped back in the car and went back to McDonalds.

While driving south on 75th Avenue, north of Thomas Road, three men walking down the street opened fire on the car, killing Peters.

“He really was a good kid,” Burch said. “What a loss for our community.”

Our next crime happened just two miles away on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at about 7 a.m.

“It’s also involves a McDonald’s, but is completely unrelated to our last case,” Burch said.

A man in his early 20s walked into the busy dining room and spotted a 65-year-old woman.

“He walks past her once, then starts walking towards her again and, this time, grabs her purse,” Burch said. “The woman hangs on, fighting for her purse. As she fell to the ground, the guy literally dragged her across the floor, breaking her finger.”

He ran to a waiting vehicle in the parking lot and got away. Burch said this crime wasn’t just brazen, it was cowardly attacking a 65-year-old woman.
