PHOENIX — As Election Day in November approaches, an increasing number of Arizona voters want to get in on the action and be heard.

According to the Arizona Secretary of State’s office, statewide voter registration has increased by nearly 120,000 people since Aug. 22.

Preliminary registration figures released Tuesday show Democrats added more than 35,500 voters, Republicans nearly 31,000 and almost 51,000 signed up without choosing a party.

“It’s great to see so many people register to vote for such an important election,” said Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan. “While the official number will be announced in a few weeks, it’s wonderful to see this level of interest. Our website www.Arizona.Vote experienced more than 23,000 visitors since late September. (On Oct. 10) alone, we had more than 9,000 visits to the site. With so many people talking about [this] year’s election it seems people are really energized to participate.”

Monday was the last day to register, except in Mohave County, which added one day. Early voting begins Wednesday.

The Democratic Party’s slight lead in signups isn’t enough to change the party mix in the state. Republicans had nearly 1.2 million registered voters and Democrats about 1 million as of Aug 22. Independents had nearly as many voters as Republicans.

Registration typically surges in competitive presidential election years, and the big increase is on par with the 2008 increase.
