PHOENIX — For the second time this week, a poll has said the race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is a dead heat in Arizona.

The poll from Emerson College released Thursday said Clinton had a slight edge over her Republican counterpart: 44 percent to 42 percent. Clinton’s lead was well within the 3.9 percent margin of error.

Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson polled at 9 percent and Green Party nominee Jill Stein had 1 percent.

The poll credited Clinton’s small lead to some former supporters of self-proclaimed independent Sen. Bernie Sanders shifting their allegiances to the Democratic nominee along with growing support among independent voters.

Clinton also polled well with Hispanics in Arizona and leads Trump’s 40 percent support by 14 percentage points.

The Emerson College poll was conducted in both English and Spanish between Oct. 2 and Oct. 4. Six hundred Arizona residents participated.

The poll contact 174 Democrats, 198 Republicans and 228 independent voters. About 40 percent of those interviewed were between 35 and 54.

Earlier this week, the latest States of the Nation poll by Reuters and Ipsos States showed three states are a toss-up, including Arizona. In Arizona, 46 percent of votes were to Trump while 44 percent to Clinton, a big turn since Trump has previously held an advantage in past polls.
