The lighting is meant to serve as a symbol of Arizona’s dedication to reduce the number of people suffering domestic abuse.
As governor of Arizona, you have my word that we will do everything we can to fight domestic violence. #ItCanStop #LightingAZpurple pic.twitter.com/4LMxzcaKBx

“If there is one thing we need to correct with regard to how some people view verbal, physical, and sexual abuse, it’s this: Domestic violence should never be seen as something that only happens to someone else,” Governor Doug Ducey said. “In 2015, we suffered 107 known deaths related to domestic violence, and children witnessed domestic violence every 44 minutes. That’s not someone else. That is all of us.”
The Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family hosted the second annual event. Director Debbie Moak echoed Gov. Ducey’s message, stating the need to unit against this issue.
“Domestic abuse is everyone’s business,” she said. “We must take a stand and support all victims of this crime. Together as a community we need to say, ‘it can stop!'”
In addition to the efforts from the governor’s office, The Home Depot is selling purple light bulbs at all Arizona locations this month, with a portion of the proceeds going to support domestic violence prevention.
