It might’ve been hard to figure out, but there are other people running in the race for the United States presidency. One of those people, Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, spoke at a Phoenix rally Saturday afternoon on how he views the current state of the nation.
According to the Detroit News, Johnson has begun to carve into Republican nominee Donald Trump’s core group of supporters in Michigan. The former New Mexico governor also mentioned in his speech during the rally that his campaign is battling against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton heavily with a specific group of voters.
“Among young people, we have just pulled equal to Hillary among millennials, the largest demographic group that exists in America today,” Johnson told his supporters at the Phoenix Airport Marriott on 44th Street.
Johnson addressed other ongoing issues that have plagued the country, including the future of a shared economy, legalizing marijuana and ending the war on drugs, embracing our neighboring countries and emphasizing the realization of discrimination in America.
The rally did not finish without a couple brief interruptions. One woman fell over, but recovered and Johnson announced that she was fine. Earlier however, a gentleman wearing a Trump-Pence 2016 shirt appeared in view of the camera yelling “vote Trump 2016”, which caused Johnson to stop mid-thought and give a hearty chuckle.
The current status of this election and the cloud of criticism surrounding both Clinton and Trump might propel Johnson’s name further in the polls. However, Johnson and Libertarians should keep 18 percent in mind. That’s the percentage that Ross Perot received of the popular vote in the 1992 election, which is currently the most successful for a third-party candidate since Theodore Roosevelt tried to win a third presidency term as a member of the Progressive party in the 1912 election.
