PHEONIX — A Phoenix high school celebrated National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday by getting out the vote.

Central High School registered seniors eligible to vote in the gym Tuesday. Students and teachers helped get the word out, as did actor Edward James Olmos, of “Stand And Deliver” and “Selena” fame.

“Voting is the single most important aspect of a democracy,” he said. “It’s the best way for us to understand what the census is of the communities.”

Central teacher Maria Chacon called Tuesday a humbling experience.

“The students are actually the ones who have engaged me,” she said. “I’ve seen them walk around with voter registration forms.”

She said students even approached people on the light rail about voting.

The deadline to sign up to register in this election is Oct. 10. You can click here to either register or update your voter information.
