PHOENIX — A new poll released Monday said presidential nominees Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are essentially in a dead heat in Arizona.

The poll from the Washington Post showed Clinton, the Democrat, leads her Republican counterpart, Trump, by just one percentage point: 46-45.

However, that number shifts to a 39-37 Trump lead when third-party candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein are included.

The poll does not have a margin of error because it was conducted by SurveyMonkey, a third-party website cannot ensure a true random sample. However, past polling results conducted by the website when comparing the margin between candidates was 4.8 percent.

The poll, conducted between Aug. 9 and Sept. 1, received responses from 74,886 registered voters.

The Washington Post poll results are close to one conducted by CNN late last month. In that poll, Trump had the support of 43 percent of registered voters, while Clinton had 38 percent. Johnson and Stein had 12 percent and 4 percent of the support.

Despite her decision to spend “six figures” to add staff in Arizona and additional expenditures on TV ad time, Clinton has been slipping in the polls in the state since one released in June gave her a slight lead.

A victory for Clinton in November’s general election would mark the first time a Democratic presidential candidate won the state since her husband, former President Bill Clinton, did so in 1996.

Trump may have enjoyed a boost in Arizona after delivering his 10-point immigration policy speech in Phoenix last week.
