PHOENIX — Former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is not expecting Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to pursue a heavy ad campaign in her state, despite some polls showing the New York billionaire being edged out by Hillary Clinton in the general election.

“I don’t think we’ll see a lot of ads here,” Brewer told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Mac & Gaydos on Tuesday.

Brewer said Trump is likely to apply his advertising budget in other states that are more perceived to be more vulnerable than Arizona, though she admitted she did not have intimate knowledge of the campaign’s plans.

“I think we might see a couple (ads), but I don’t think we’ll see as many as are going to be in these other states,” she said.

Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, is planning a six-figure expenditure to increase her campaign staff in Arizona. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid told Politico last month that he feels Clinton will not only campaign in, but win, Arizona in November.

Some polls said Clinton will indeed take the Grand Canyon State while others show Trump trailing the Democrat outside of Arizona as well.

“We don’t want to look at those poll numbers,” Brewer said. “They’re very concerning and we need to close that gap in the next 87 days.”

The former governor said it is likely Trump will tone down his rhetoric to appeal to more voters in the coming months.

“I think, moving forward, we’ll see a much tighter campaign,” she said. “I truly believe that. It has to happen.”

The nominee was noticeably more tame during a speech on Monday and Brewer said she wants to see Trump focus more on his policies as Nov. 8 edges closer.

“I agree that Donald needs to talk about his policies,” she said. “He needs to talk about the economy, he needs to talk about jobs, he needs to talk about security for our great country.”
