Carson Walker named AP’s Dakotas News Editor

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – Carson Walker, a veteran reporter and editor in South Dakota, has been named The Associated Press’ news editor for the Dakotas.
Walker returned to the cooperative’s Sioux Falls bureau in July 2013 as a breaking news reporter. In his new position, he will oversee the AP’s reporting staff in North Dakota and South Dakota and have responsibility for the creation of the AP’s report in both states.
Walker, 47, will be based in Sioux Falls. His appointment was announced Monday by David Scott, the AP’s Central Region Editor.
“Carson knows the story of the Dakotas and it’s one he’s told from television, newspaper and AP newsrooms for the past two decades,” Scott said. “We’re excited to have him in this new role and eager to see the journalism he and his team will offer our members and customers in both states.”
Walker began his professional career at KDLT-TV in Sioux Falls, where he worked as a reporter, anchor and producer. He was later a reporter at The Argus Leader in Sioux Falls and served as KDLT’s news director before joining the AP in 1998 as the Dakotas Broadcast Editor. He served in that role for 11 years before joining the AP’s West Regional editing desk in 2009.
“Carson has deep understanding of the territory and of the needs of the newsrooms that make up the AP cooperative,” said Michelle Morgante, the AP’s chief of bureau for the Dakotas, Minnesota and Nebraska. “We are confident that he and the Dakotas team will work hard to keep our members ahead.”
Walker is a 1989 graduate of Colorado State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science.
