Agents arrest Illinois fugitive in Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE (AP) – A man suspected of carjacking a vehicle in Chicago over the weekend and causing a collision that killed an 11-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday as he waited to pick up fast food in Wisconsin, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Agents got word that the 34-year-old suspect had fled to Milwaukee’s north side, said Ed Farrell, a supervisory inspector for the Marshals Service. They scoured the area until they spotted the stolen vehicle waiting in a restaurant’s drive-through lane.
Authorities boxed in the man’s vehicle, using a police truck to pin his car against the building. The man initially tried to use a female passenger as a shield but then gave up without a struggle, U.S. Marshal Kevin Carr said.
The Associated Press is not naming the man because it’s not clear whether he’s been formally charged. Farrell said the man is from Beach Park, Ill., near the Wisconsin border.
Chicago police said the man was wanted for a series of three carjackings on Friday and Saturday, at least one of which involved a handgun.
In the first, the suspect allegedly pulled a victim from a minivan Friday morning, got in and fled the scene. The next day, with officers closing in on him, he sped away in the minivan and slammed into another vehicle, police said.
The collision killed 11-year-old Donovan Turnage, a Chicago fifth-grader who was going with his father and brother to get a Christmas haircut. The father was seriously injured.
The suspect scrambled out of the wrecked minivan and allegedly carjacked a second vehicle. That vehicle broke down a short time later, and when a good stopped Samaritan to help him, the suspect stole that person’s car and drove off, police said.
Farrell said the suspect was in the custody of Milwaukee police and that efforts were underway to extradite him to Illinois.
