Family says questions remain about student’s death

BAYTOWN, Texas (AP) – Family and friends are gathering to remember a Texas college student who was fatally shot by a campus police officer during a traffic stop.
Robert Cameron Redus’ family says it doesn’t believe the Cpl. Chris Carter’s account of the events that led him to shoot Redus five times early last Friday morning.
Redus had made the dean’s list at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio and was co-valedictorian of his high school class while growing up in Baytown, the Houston suburb where Thursday’s services are being held.
They say Redus was caring and compassionate.
Carter says Redus refused to be handcuffed and hit him with his own nightstick during a struggle. He says he opened fire on Redus after Redus ignored his warnings and charged at him.
