NYC man dies in paraglider crash in upstate river

NEW HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) – State police say a 47-year-old New York City man died when he crashed into an upstate river while paragliding.

Troopers say Rupert Cebular of Manhattan and another man were operating powered paragliders from Randall Airport in Middletown on Wednesday when Cebular tried to practice a touch-and-go maneuver on the frozen surface of the Wallkill River, 60 miles northwest of New York City.

Police say Cebular crashed and broke through the ice. They say Cebular was dead when witnesses and the other paraglider pulled him from the river.

The Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

A paraglider is a form of ultra-light flying machine using a motor mounted on the pilot’s back and a paraglider wing similar to a parachute.
