NY governor: Eye train operator’s ‘behavior’

NEW YORK (AP) – New York’s governor says the operator of a train involved in a fatal derailment should be “disciplined in an appropriate way.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH’-moh) made the comment about William Rockefeller at an unrelated event Tuesday.

Investigators have not determined whether Sunday’s crash was caused by operator error or illness, a mechanical problem or some other factor.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the train was going 82 mph as it entered a 30 mph turn.

Cuomo called that a “gross deviation from the norm.”

He said other agencies might want to take a look at the engineer’s “behavior in operating the train.”

Union leader Anthony Bottalico (boh-TAL’-ih-koh) says he is confident the investigation will reveal “there was no criminal intent.”

Four people died and more than 60 were injured in the wreck.
