High winds, tent topple iconic Fort Drum statue

FORT DRUM, N.Y. (AP) – A statue that has become the iconic symbol of the Army’s 10th Mountain Division is out of commission after being topped by high winds.

Officials at Fort Drum in northern New York say a tent set up for a Veterans Day ceremony Thursday was dislodged by high winds late Wednesday night and slammed into the 18-foot-tall Military Mountaineers Monument, knocking it off its base.

The 1,800-pound sculpture known as the “Climb To Glory” has only minor damage because it landed in a thick bed of mulch. It’s expected to be repaired within a week.

The statue was installed at Fort Drum’s Memorial Park in 1991. It depicts a World War II soldier using a rope to assist a climbing 10th Mountain soldier outfitted in modern gear.
