As your kids head back to school, keep an eye out for stress

As your kids head back to school, keep an eye out for stress.

“First, you need to realize that research on teens suggests that they’re more stressed out than adults are,” said Dr. Jon McCaine with Bayless Healthcare in Phoenix, who specializes in at-risk teens.

“We’ve been doing for a while”, he added. “Kids are emerging adults. First job. First time in serious relationships.

“So, I think it’s important to understand that they’re probably scared and nervous,” he explained.

Parents can help by watching for significant changes in mood, sleeping or eating habits. But how do they know when to help?

“That’s a tough one, because some kids really want you to be involved right away, and other kids want to struggle with it alone,” he said.

McCaine added that the best thing is to ask, give them a choice and to be reassuring.
