200 Phoenix-area homes to get free fireplace retrofits from county

PHOENIX — The future of clean air in the Phoenix area is taking a more personalized approach in 200 homes, with help from county leaders.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has approved a pilot program that will reward some Phoenix-area homes with free retrofits for wood-burning fireplaces or chimneys.
“It’s critical to take a proactive approach not only to improve community well-being, but also to reduce or eliminate costs associated with violations,” District 5 Supervisor Steve Gallardo said in a release.
The $300,000 pilot program approved by the supervisors will either retrofit chimneys with catalytic conversion technology or convert wood-burning fireplaces to natural gas.
Costs of the retrofit likely will cost between $900-$1,500 each.
Officials said funding for the program is coming from money paid as penalties or settlements.
Homes have to fall within the boundaries of Baseline Road, Northern and 59th avenues and 16th Street.
The county Air Quality Department will oversee the program.
