FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) – Military officials say Bradley Manning has returned to a prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., to serve his 35-year prison sentence for giving mountains of classified material to WikiLeaks.
The Army confirmed Manning had arrived at the military prison Thursday. Manning also announced Thursday that the soldier intends to live as a woman named Chelsea and wants to undergo hormone treatment. But the military says it doesn’t provide that treatment.
Fort Leavenworth is an all-male prison. Spokesman George Marcec says the staff has some leeway to separate soldiers from the other inmates based on the risk to themselves and others.
He says Manning would not be allowed to wear a wig or bra, and his hair would have to be kept to military standard.
