EL PASO, Texas (AP) – The mother of a Marine killed after a bloody rampage in Texas that left one person dead and several wounded says her son “was a very bright, quiet, calm man.”
In an interview with The Associated Press, Rosalva Jimenez of Bakersfield, Calif., said she last spoke with her son, Marine Lance Cpl. Esteban Smith, on Thursday.
Speaking in Spanish, Jimenez said her son “was OK, but he went crazy all of a sudden.”
Smith also is suspected of killing his wife, whose body was found in a North Carolina motel room near Camp Lejeune, N.C., where Smith was based. His mother said she knew of no problems between her son and daughter-in-law and that her son’s wife had even gone from California to North Carolina to surprise him.
