No charges in death of amputee mauled by dogs

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) – Authorities say no charges will be filed in the death of an 80-year-old double-amputee mauled to death by dogs earlier this month in South Carolina.

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release Tuesday that the four dogs that attacked Carlton Freeman on May 8 in Harleyville were feral and did not belong to anyone.

Both of Freeman’s legs had been amputated below the knee. Authorities said he was dragged from his wheelchair and mauled by the dogs. He died four days later at a local hospital.

Deputies said the sheriff, local prosecutors, animal control workers and the coroner investigated before deciding not to press charges against anyone.

Authorities said both the victim and later his family had asked that no charges be filed.
