WASHINGTON (AP) – The Justice Department says Trinidad and Tobago has extradited a woman to face trial in the U.S. for the kidnapping and killing of an American citizen in the Caribbean country.
Doreen Alexander is accused of organizing the kidnapping of Balram Maharaj as he visited his native country in 2005. Seven Trinidadian men were previously convicted for their roles in the plot.
The 47-yearold Alexander had been Maharaj’s girlfriend. Officials say she arranged to have him kidnapped from a Port-of-Spain bar. The plot went awry and the 62-year-old Army veteran from Mount Vernon, N.Y., was shot to death.
The Justice Department said Tuesday that Alexander faces two counts for aiding the plot and could get life in prison. She has previously denied the allegations and fought extradition since 2006.
