BORN _ Aug. 27, 1959, in Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies. Moved to the U.S. at the age of 8.

EXPERIENCE _ Served 20 years in the U.S. Navy, retired lieutenant commander. Ran unsuccessfully for Florida’s 3rd Congressional District seat in 2000. Appointed executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs in 2000 by Gov. Jeb Bush. Elected to Florida House of Representatives in a 2003 special election to replace Mike Hogan, who resigned. Selected by Rick Scott to be his running mate on Sept. 2, 2010. Inaugurated as the state’s first African-American lieutenant governor on Jan. 4, 2011. Resigned as lieutenant governor on March 13, 2013 after being questioned in a widening investigation on suspected illegal gambling.
