An eight-time Ironman competitor who is now a Gilbert attorney specializing in bicycle accident cases is scheduled to peddle into Arizona on Wednesday as part of a ride that will take on some of the most challenging terrain in the country.
Ultra-cyclist Ben Dodge hopped on his bike on Tuesday in Oceanside, California.
“I’m racing in a bicycle race called Race Across the West,” he said. “It’s a 928 mile non-stop race from Oceanside all the way to Durango, Colorado.”
This is the ninth annual Race Across the West. It is Dodge’s longest endurance race to date. He will compete against seasoned cyclists from all over Europe and the USA and will be trying to make the ride in 92 consecutive hours, with little or no sleep.
There are a couple of reasons Dodge is making the ride. One is to encourage car and truck drivers to watch out for people on bikes.
“Cyclists can be anywhere on the road at any time,” Dodge said. “Just one second of distraction, whether that is the cell phone, or whatever the distraction, that one second could be somebody’s life.”
He’s also out to show people that you don’t have to be an Ironman competitor to do something special.
“I’m just a regular guy. If you practice and if you try hard, I think as an ordinary person you can do extraordinary things,” said Dodge.
He added that he has been looking forward to the race.
“I hope to bring a little more safety awareness, but, on a personal note, I’m just drawn to this challenge like a moth to a flame. I’d like to give it a go,” said Dodge.
Dodge will cross into Arizona from Blythe, California. The route then turns northeast and takes him through Prescott, Flagstaff and then through Arizona and on into Colorado.
